A Quick Overview Of Clearwater Beach vs Sand Key

Clearwater Beach

Located on a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico on the west-central coast of Florida, Clearwater Beach is known throughout the United States for its gorgeous white sand beaches that stretch for 2.5 miles.

That coastline is so special that it’s often ranked as one of the best beaches in the country. In fact, Clearwater Beach and its shallow, crystal-clear water, has been twice named by USA Today as Florida’s Best Beach Town.

It’s also a place that is popular, busy, and has plenty of beach bars and activities on offer. It has a lively nightlife scene too.

With its subtropical climate and pleasant weather for most of the year, this place (and Sand Key too) is perfect for days spent on the beach or participating in outdoor activities.

Sand Key

Sand Key is another gorgeous barrier island on Florida’s Gulf Coast that stretches from Madeira Beach through to Clearwater Beach.

It’s often referred to as Sand Key Beach or Sand Key Park. Both are actually correct as the area is made up of a beach and a park which has lots of nature and wildlife spotting opportunities.

There are plenty of spots for picnics, and grills are available to use for cooking a beachside lunch. There is a dog park, water fountains, restrooms, and a playground for kids to enjoy.

This is very family friendly destination, and also a much more quiet and laid-back place than nearby Clearwater Beach. So don’t expect nightlife in Sand Key – if you want beach parties and cocktails then you’re better heading across the bridge to Clearwater Beach!

Instead, Sand Key not only has wonderful white sand beaches, but it’s also a wildlife paradise. If birdwatching is on your vacation to-do list, you can sit on the bench near the salt marsh at Sand Key and watch out for birds such as herons, roseate spoonbills, and great horned owls.

Sand Key is also home to conservation efforts for sea turtles, who lay their eggs on the beach. There’s various other wildlife to keep your eyes out for too, including stingrays and dolphins. Some visitors have even spotted coyotes in the park!

Which Is Better For Beaches?

Clearwater Beach

This bustling and lively beach city attracts more of a college-age and young-adult crowd than Sand Key.

It’s the main beach in Clearwater and boasts soft, white sand. Beach parking is limited and can be expensive though, and parking is limited to five hours unless you are staying at one of the beachfront hotels.

Clearwater can get very busy at the weekends and holidays too, but as it’s so popular you will find many things to do. Be that visiting Clearwater Aquarium or hiring jet skis.

There’s also Pier 60, a huge fishing pier where there’s children’s play equipment and even entertainers that perform in the evening.

Clearwater Beach also has a lively nightlife scene and you won’t be stuck for things to do when the sun goes down. Whether that is relaxing with a cocktail in a beach bar or dancing the night away in one of Clearwater Beach’s nightclubs.

Sand Key

This gorgeous beach and nature park is tranquil and much more quiet than Clearwater Beach. It’s also laid-back, less developed as it encompasses protected areas of nature, and subsequently it’s less touristy and crowded.

The sand is not as soft as the sand at Clearwater Beach as it is mixed with shells, although that makes it a fun place for kids and adults to go beach combing. However there’s plenty of parking, unlike Clearwater, and at only $5 a day it’s very affordable.

Basically, Sand Key is a place to soak in the rays without the crowds.

In regards to activities there’s far less to do on Sand Key than Clearwater Beach, but as they’re so close together that’s not a big issue. If you’re in the mood for action spend a few hours at Clearwater, but if you need some relaxation and peace then head over to Sand Key.

That’s the great thing about both being so close, you can have two completely different experiences in one day.

That’s not to say there aren’t activities at Sand Key. You can do all the usual beach activities like swimming and snorkelling with turtles, and you can hire kayaks and paddle boards from the Sheraton Sand Key Resort. You can also take a hike through the park and look out for wildlife.

And that’s what Sand Key is all about – getting closer to nature. You’re not going to find nightclubs here, but you will find peace and quiet to stargaze and wildlife spot instead.

However prices can be quite high. The lower end for hotels can be around $100 per night, while the more expensive upmarket hotels can be upwards of $800 per night.

As the smaller of the two destinations, Sand Key has far fewer accommodation options.

The two hotels at Sand Key are Clearwater Beach Marriott Suites on Sand Key and Sheraton Sand Key Resort. Both can cost around $500 per night.

How Do The Activities Compare?

As both of these beaches are only about five minutes apart, whichever you decide to visit will be close to some great attractions which are worth visiting.

Here are four places you should visit regardless of whether you choose Clearwater Beach or Sand Key.

As you may have already guessed, most of the activities and landmarks are in the more lively and busy Clearwater Beach.

1. Clearwater Marine Aquarium

This aquarium was home to Winter the Dolphin, the star of the movie “Dolphin Tales,” and is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating ocean animals. While there you can observe and learn about the rescued animals.

While the facility is small in size, the atmosphere is more intimate and that makes it easy to get up close to the animals – something children will love. The shark exhibit and the dolphin exhibit are some of the aquarium’s most popular attractions

2. Pier 60

One of the main attractions at Clearwater Beach is Pier 60. Located off of Causeway Boulevard, about a mile west of Clearwater Marine Aquarium, this huge 1080-foot pier overlooks the Gulf of Mexico.

There’s a bait and tackle shop that rents out fishing equipment if you are interested in spending the day fishing there. Whilst for kids there are playgrounds and large inflatable slides.

Shaded pavilions provide shelter from the sun while enjoying the pier. And at night artisans sell their goods while jugglers and stilt walkers perform. It’s a very fun atmosphere which sums up Clearwater Beach well.

The beach area near the pier also has a fun atmosphere with lots of activities, but it can get very crowded.

3. Cleveland Street District

If you are looking for outside shopping and dining, then the Cleveland Street District in downtown Clearwater is a great experience.

Just east of Clearwater Beach, this street is lined with tables and benches where you can relax or stroll through the farmers’ market. There are a variety of restaurants, wine bars, pubs, and a 100-year-old theatre.

Some of the most notable locations include Bilheimer Capitol Theatre, which features big-name musicians despite the 750-person capacity. The theatre also houses special events, such as the Clearwater Jazz Holiday, so check the upcoming events to ensure you don’t miss out.

The Milan-based fashion house Gioffrè Boutique is based in the district too, and offers unique clothes that may seem to clash with the local aesthetic! Black capes, high-waisted leather pants, and velvet pantsuits are among the clothing items that are available at this boutique.

Just make sure to call ahead and schedule your reservation. As in true couture style, they don’t take walk-ins.

4. Caladesi Island State Park

If walking trails and nature-inspired reflection are what you desire, Caladesi Island State Park is the place to go.

Located north of Clearwater Beach, nature lovers will appreciate the untouched natural areas at the state park and the less-crowded beaches.

The park offers fishing, hiking, kayaking in mangroves, and picnicking. There is also a large marina, a gift shop, and a concession stand. The park is open from 8 a.m. until sundown.

You can also take the ferry over to Honeymoon Island, which is known for its beautiful beaches and many shells!

Clearwater Beach and Sand Key both offer an outstanding vacation destination. However despite being so close together they are very different.

Whilst the beaches are very similar, the sand at Clearwater Beach is a little softer.
