Volunteering in Hargeisa, and Somaliland in general, would be a great way to use your time, and a wonderful way to get to know the country while doing something worthwhile.

There are several options for becoming a volunteer in Hargeisa and Somaliland , but they’re not so easy to find.

Thankfully we’ve done the hard work and found some great options for you, with hospitals, schools, and NGOs

Six Worthwhile Volunteer Roles In Hargeisa & Somaliland

1. Edna Adan Hospital

One of Hargeisa’s most famous and important hospitals, the Edna Adan Hospital has a fascinating backstory. Specializing in maternity care, the hospital is always on the look out for volunteers who have a background in midwifery, nursing, medicine and other health professions.

Also a teaching hospital, they take on a few volunteers a year to help teach English to staff and students, IT professionals, and researchers to help with ongoing projects such as their research on FGM.

2. The Horn of Africa Voluntary Youth Committee (Havoyoco)

An NGO based in Somaliland’s capital of Hargeisa, Havoyoco raises awareness on issues such as HIV, as well as train Somaliland youth (including street children, and former child soldiers) in a variety of skills and trades.

They’re looking for volunteers who can commit a minimum of three months. These will train youth in relevant skills and trades such as cooking, sewing, carpentry, mechanics and so on.

3. Abaarso Tech Secondary School

This nonprofit school is located in Abaarso around 20 kilometers outside of Hargeisa. The school is doing fantastic work, and is always looking for volunteers. Especially in the fields of English, Science, Computer Science and Mathematics.

There’s no minimum volunteer stay period. Generally, there are many schools in Somaliland that are on the look out for volunteer teachers, who do not have an English web presence. Just ask around when you arrive in the country.

You can also visit a few head teachers yourself to find out if there are positions available.

4. Hargeisa Orphanage Centre

Always on the look out for both short-term and long-term volunteers, Hargeisa Orphanage Centre is open to all volunteers regardless of age, qualifications, or nationality.

What they want are people with enthusiasm, patience, and a good heart. Who also can help teach, look after, and play with the kids in the centre’s care. If you’re an artist or a musician, then you’ll be especially welcome!

5. Somaliland Mental Health Support Organisation

As a country with a recent traumatic past, there are a lot of mental wounds throughout Somaliland society. If you’re looking to volunteering in Hargeisa within the Mental Health sector, this could be a good option for you.

Based in Hargeisa, the Somaliland Mental Health Support Organisation is keen to hear from people who believe they can be an asset in helping to assist those suffering from mental health issues throughout Somaliland, and want to come to the country and volunteer.

6. SHIFAT

Working in Hargeisa and throughout Somaliland, SHIFAT, brings health care to those who need it. Therefore, they are always on the look out for health professionals who can help volunteer on the ground. All levels are welcome.
