Mezcal and Margaritas: The Best Bars in Tulum

The serious nightlife in Tulum starts after dinner. And we can’t think of a better way than spending time in one of their speciality mezcal bars. There you can try innovative, handcrafted cocktails made from the freshest ingredients.  After all, Mexico is famous for its tequila, mezcal and margaritas.

1. Batey Mojito & Guarapo Bar

Batey, a popular Cuban cocktail bar gets into party mode as the sun begins to set. They are known for their iconic brightly painted VW bug which has been converted into a sugar press. Fresh mojitos reign supreme and are a must with dozens of flavors to choose from. For something different try the prickly pear cactus and peppermint or the refreshing watermelon and lime.

There is live music most nights but the real parties at Batey’s happen on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The atmosphere here is one of celebration and you definitely won’t regret giving it a bash.

2. Gitano

Gitano is the ideal place for dinner or after-dinner cocktails. But when it comes to mezcal bars, we have to put Gitano on top of the list! Why? Well, they have over 40 different mezcals from Oaxaca on offer!

They have three locations, but the one set in the tropical jungle is super special. It epitomizes nightlife in Tulum with its open-air setting, fairy lights and disco balls hanging from the tress. When stepping into Gitano you just know it’s going to be a night to remember.

Imaginative cocktails inspired by the 1940’s tropical Tiki bars are freshly made with local fruits, herbs and spices, and all their juices and syrups are made in-house daily. What better way to kick off your cocktail tasting than with their Jungle Fever, a classic combination of mezcal, chili, cilantro, and lime.

They serve classic Mexican dishes but with an updated modern spin, using the freshest ingredients all cooked in their wood-burning oven and open grill. Try their roasted pork too, rumored to have been cooking for over 12 hours!

As we mentioned, restaurants, bars, and clubs tend to morph into one and Gitano’s is the place to be on a Friday night. Their Gypsy disco nights start with the DJ kicking off around 10 pm. The tropical club atmosphere will have you dancing all night.

3. Mateo’s Mexican Grill & Bar

Trying to find the perfect place to watch those spectacular Caribbean sunsets? Then Mateo’s Mexican Grill and Bar is just what you are looking for. Watch the sunset with a Mayan Mint Spritzer or a Mango Margarita on their rooftop terrace whilst enjoying their 2 for 3 happy hour special.

Mateo’s not only offers one of the best sunset views, but the combination of great food, drinks, live music, and exceptional service may just see you turn your sundowners into an all-night affair.

Try their famous fish tacos or burritos with green chili. For starters, we recommend the fresh ceviche or Baja fish bites served with tamarind and their secret sauce. And if you are feeling homesick, go ahead and order yourself that Tex Mex Burger.

Mateo’s is open 7 nights a week and closes around 11 pm Sunday through to Wednesday. But you are in for a treat over the weekend as they are open until 1 am. Those late-night snacks are definitely going to come in handy!

Top Party Spots and Nightclubs in Tulum

1. Casa Jaguar

Strictly speaking, Casa Jaguar is more of a restaurant than anything else, but you really cannot truly experience Tulum nightlife without going to Casa Jaguar on a Thursday night. Their Jungle Parties are one of a kind and kick off at around 11 pm!

A combination of live bands, local and international DJs will keep you partying late into the night. If you are in the mood for a casual but chic cocktail party accompanied by live entertainment, then you can’t afford to miss Tuesday nights at Casa Jaguar.

This beachside restaurant is well worth a visit and their ceviche, grilled octopus and prawns are a few of our favorites. They describe their food as “simple, unpretentious, sophisticated yet abounding with flavor” and we tend to agree. And for those of you with a sweet tooth, their churros are definitely worth the calories.

2. Papaya Playa Project

The Papaya Playa Project may be a sustainable beachside boutique hotel, but it is has become a truly iconic Tulum nightlife spot, famous for full-moon and Saturday night parties.

It is the only place to see and be seen on a Saturday night and their legendary full moon parties occur on the Saturday closest to the full moon. Prepare yourself for a hip, happening beach party experience on a whole new level. Famous DJs will entertain you whilst you party under the moon on sandy white beaches through to the early hours of the morning.

It is going to be a long night, so we recommend trying their restaurant beforehand. Why not try the Blue-fin tuna cubes served with squash seed pesto, pickled onion and coconut milk, or their Caesar Salad with smoked oysters? And if you are in the mood there is a Triple Chocolate Cake which is superb.

They are open every night until 1 am and as they say, “We have no limits, when it comes to partying!” This will be a night you will not easily forget.

As Art Beach say, their goal is to fuse food and art into perfection. Breath-taking views of the ocean have been combined with DJ shows mixed with art and the finest cuisine.

If you are not sure what to order try the yellowfin tuna served with a wheat tostado, roasted chili guero with a grasshopper sauce.

For something completely different, book the Chef’s Table for a culinary delight you won’t forget in a hurry. You will be hosted by the Chef and his team and partake in an 8-course tasting menu paired with their signature cocktails, local beers, and wines.

La Zebra hosts Taco Thursdays between 6 and 10 pm. Get ready to be entertained by live Latin music while enjoying freshly prepared tacos, garnachas and tasty salsas from all around Mexico.

Our Favorite Places to Eat in Tulum

Food in Tulum is exotic, full of flavor and a tastebud treat – Tulum is not only a beach destination but also a culinary paradise. There is an abundance of choice from fine dining to the more relaxed taquerias. Or for those in a rush, the food carts are the perfect option.

From authentic Mexican dishes to homemade Italian pasta and some of the best steaks you will ever taste, here are our top picks to help you along with your food journey.

1. Hartwood

For Hartwood, sustainability is key and top of their mind when making any decision relating to their restaurant. They use solar power and wood-burning ovens and grills for all their cooking. Their chalkboard menu changes daily depending on the catch of the day or what locally sourced ingredients are available at the time.

This fine-dining restaurant is completely outdoors, and we think a candlelit dinner under the jungle canopy is going to be difficult to beat. They are known for their seafood, like amberjack, snapper, and robalo. If you are not in the mood for seafood, their pork and slow-cooked ribs are definitely worth a try.

Hartwood is popular and although they say they do accept walk-ins it is advisable to make an online reservation as they are generally booked out weeks in advance.

Their open kitchen is a highlight offering delicious authentic Mexican cuisine and cocktails but with a creative twist. The menu is seasonal, showcasing the freshest ingredients sourced in Tulum. Try their grilled octopus with sweet potatoes or their crispy pork belly and you will not be disappointed.

They’re so unique, that since 2016 it’s been possible to pay for your dinner with crypto!

3. Posada Margherita

Located right on the beach inside the Posada Margherita Hotel, you cannot be blamed for mistakenly thinking you have been whisked off to Italy when spending an evening at the Posada Margherita.

The menu features some of their family favorites brought all the way from Genoa and they promise their pasta is made from scratch the moment you place your order. Pair your meal with an Italian wine or try one of their hand-crafted cocktails.

But make sure to keep room for dessert, because you cannot leave without trying their homemade gelato made with coconut from their very own palm trees.

4. El Asadero

If you are looking for a juicy steak, then El Asadero is your type of restaurant. Their steaks are flamed-grilled and served with crispy chips and spicy salsa. They have a selection of various cuts from rib-eye to T-bone, but we recommend their house speciality, Arrachera skirt steak, or the flank steak served with sausage.

For those of you wanting to try something completely different, we suggest you give the grilled cactus a chance – you will be pleasantly surprised.

Don’t forget to order a local beer while you peruse the menu. El Asadero has a fabulous wine list, and we recommend pairing your steak with one of the local red wines.

El Camello, or as the locals call it “Camellito” is a favorite with both locals and tourists and its reputed to have the freshest seafood in town.

This roadside restaurant was founded by a local fishing group and is renowned for some of the best ceviche you will ever taste. Their fish or shrimp tacos are fresh and packed with flavor and a great light meal option.

We suggest you arrive hungry as Carmellitos is known for their over-generous servings! For a true seafood delight you need to order the grilled fish served with rice, beans and plátanos.

This is truly an authentic Tulum experience, and you will most certainly be going back for more.

This beachside restaurant has an extensive wine and cocktail list, and we recommend trying some of their signature classics like the Clementine.

If you are looking for a contemporary restaurant with a festive vibe, then Bagatelle is a must. With its consistent flow of great entertainment from live shows to top-rated DJs, you will find yourself dancing the night away here too.

Late-Night Food Options In Tulum

Most restaurants in Tulum stay open until between 10 and 11 pm so you will not battle to find late-night fare. But we feel Antojitos de Chiapaneca, Palma Central and Origami offer something a little bit different. All three close around 11 pm, still giving you enough time to grab that late-night bite.

1. Antojitos de Chiapaneca

You cannot go to Tulum and not visit Antojitos de Chiapaneca at least once. Renowned for their tacos, you will not be disappointed by the combination of simple food packed with flavor and an added bonus of value for money. You always know you are onto a good thing when you are competing with the locals to get your order in!

Choices are easy – beef, chicken, or pork in a taco or torta. The charred pork is cooked on the spit all day long and is a firm favorite. Once you have received your food, head off to the middle of the restaurant to add your extras like freshly made guacamole and spicy red salsa.

2. Palma Central

Palma Central is the place to be when it comes to a food truck dining experience. There is something magical about the lighting at night there, which combined with great food, large communal tables and live music is a place not to be missed.

You will not be spoiled for choice with over ten food trucks lined up against the fence. Options include burgers, traditional Mexican food, pizzas, and there is even a Japanese truck, all making the most of local flavors. The Arepas and Tostadaria food trucks come highly recommended and are definitely worth a try.

The food is all made to order, so you may have to wait, which is the ideal time to grab a drink from the large bar or coffee van and find a spot to sit and listen to the live music. And if you are lucky enough to be there on one of their salsa nights, you will not be able to stay seated for long!

3. Origami

What are late-night food options without dessert? Origami is a local favorite, and you will not regret trying their homemade gelato. They have a wide range of flavors, and the best part is they offer free tastings so no need for any guessing games when it comes to choosing the perfect one!
