Volunteering is one of the best ways to experience, visit, learn, and see a country – and that definitely includes volunteering in Liberia and its capital city Monrovia.

It isn’t, however, that easy to find volunteer roles in Liberia or Monrovia, unless you’re already in the country.

That’s why we’ve decided to help!

We’ve compiled some of the best volunteering opportunities in Liberia, Monrovia and other cities, including volunteer roles with small local organizations, as well as international NGOs.

1. Initiative for the Development of Former Child Soldiers (IDEFOCS)

This organization is doing vital work in Liberia, and was founded by former child soldiers to help others like them.

IDEFOCS works tirelessy to try and prevent the recruitment of children in war, as well as provide trauma counseling for former child soldiers, and rehabilitation projects that can educate and teach them academic and vocational skills.

2. JFK Hospital

JFK Hospital in Liberia often welcomes experienced medical professionals to volunteer for a minimum of three-six months.

Not only will you carry out humanitarian work, but also help teach healthcare professionals at the hospital.

3. Peace Corps

Probably one of the most famous volunteer-based organizations in the world, the Peace Corps works in Liberia on a multitude of projects in the capital of Monrovia, as well as in very rural parts of the country.

You must be a U.S. citizen to volunteer, and the placements are usually long term and will involve learning one of the local languages.

So what sort of tasks would you be doing? Well, volunteers most often work in education, or if you have any medical experience you could be posted to do healthcare projects.

4. Street Child

Well-known international NGO, Street Child, has volunteer positions in Liberia, and does some fantastic work in the country.

They are often on the look out for people with teaching experience to help their education programs in Liberia flourish.

5. Students Aid Liberia

Based in Monrovia, Students Aid Liberia’s mission is simple – provide education and equal opportunity to children throughout the country, giving them the chance to be world class students.

Want to make a difference to children’s lives in Liberia?

Well you can! SAL are looking for volunteers for several positions, including teaching, teacher training, helping with grant and proposal writing, social media, IT support and much more.

6. Women-Concern Liberia

A fantastic NGO based in Monrovia, Women-Concern are always on the look out for volunteers who can help them in their mission to empower Liberian women.

They promote gender equality in the country, and work tirelessly to improve and provide sexual and health information, and improve the rights of women and girls in Liberia.

While anyone who shares their aims is welcomed to get in touch about volunteering, Women-Concern are particularly looking for individuals with prior NGO experience.

7. Youth-Aid Liberia (YAL)

Working across the country, YAL works with local youth to build their leadership skills and capabilities, whilst providing educational opportunities. In their own words:

“YAL is a national youth led platform and youth focused organization working with young people of Liberia irrespective of educational, religious, political, cultural and economic statuses by inspiring, motivating and empowering their leadership capacities.”

8. Youth in Technology and Arts Network (YOTAN)

YOTAN, based out of Liberia’s King Gray Town, works with young Liberians teaching them a variety of skills such as peacebuilding, information communication and arts subjects.

Not only that, they’ve worked on climate change projects in the past, and make a conscious effort to reach out and include women in their programmes.
