No matter what time of the year it is, Mevagissey is the perfect holiday destination: in summer, it’s all about the ice cream and walks on the beach, and in winter it’s about staying cosy in front of a fire with the perfect mug of hot chocolate. But the thing that unites both seasons is the food! 

As a fishing port, Mevagissey is a great place to sample some incredible seafood. Whether that be traditional fish and chips or a fancy lobster dish, you’re sure to find the perfect plate for you.

But don’t worry, even if you’re not the biggest fan of seafood, the restaurants in Mevagissey – as we show you next – will have something to offer you.

The Best Restaurants In Mevagissey: Food Worth Waiting For!

1. The Sharksfin

A waterfront restaurant specialising in standard British fare, as well as seafood. 

No trip to Mevagissey would be complete without sampling some of its seafood, and a great place to start is The Sharksfin. This nautical themed restaurant with exposed brick wall and friendly and attentive staff is a great place for a delicious meal with your family and for a romantic meal overlooking the harbour. 

The menu is an extensive one and is sure to cater to any and all tastes that you may have! One favourite is a staple of British seafood – the Beer Batter cod, served with homemade mushy peas, tartare sauce and curry sauce! But many also love the Popcorn Shrimp Tacos that are served with piri-piri mayos and pickles.

But if you’re not in the mood for seafood, don’t worry! The Sharksfin also offers a number of meat dishes, including the Chargrilled Sirloin Steak, Buttermilk Chicken Tacos and burgers! There’s also some vegan and vegetarian options too. 

The Sharksfin also has a wide ranging drinks menu, from soft drinks, to wine, to beer and a number of different cocktails and mocktails. But since you’re in Cornwall, why not try a local Cornish gin? 

And to top it all off, the Sharksfin is dog friendly! 

The Sharksfin is open everyday from 10.30 am until late, so pop down to enjoy some incredible food alongside a breathtaking view at easily one of the best restaurants in Mevagissey.

2. The Wheelhouse

A restaurant and guesthouse overlooking the picturesque Mevagissey Harbour. 

Situated in a house that has been standing in the West Wharf of Mevagissey Harbour since at least the 1820s, The Wheelhouse offers breathtaking views alongside mouthwatering food! 

The Wheelhouse has the standard British fare, including fish and chips, pie and a selection of burgers. But there is also a separate pizza menu with a wide range of pizzas to choose from. One of the popular choices from that is the Formaggio Di Capra Caramellato which is topped with goats cheese and caramelised onion. 

And for those with a sweet tooth, The Wheelhouse also has a dessert menu, and no trip to Cornwall could possibly be complete without a traditional Cornish Cream Tea. This includes a large scone, strawberry jam and clotted cream, and is the perfect sweet treat to enjoy whilst admiring the view. 

And if you’re eager to see all the sights that Mevagissey has to offer and don’t have time to sit down, don’t worry. You can order your food to be taken away, so you can eat whilst on the go.

3. Harbour Tavern

A casual dining restaurant that specialises in locally sourced, fresh seafood with beautiful views of the harbour. 

Sometimes, all you want is a delicious meal without all the faff of fine dining – and that’s where Harbour Tavern comes in. Priding themselves on having a laid back and informal atmosphere and with its rustic wood panelling and arching windows, it’s the perfect setting for a casual date night or an evening with friends.

The menu is jam packed with incredible dishes to choose from and surely has something to suit every member of your party.

Many love the Battered Tiger Prawns that are served with mixed salad, fries and sweet chilli mayo, or even their delicious Fish and Chips. If you’re indecisive though, then we recommend ordering from the Cornish Inspired Tapas section of the menu! Favourites on that include the Mixed Olives, Spicy Potatoes and House Cured Salmon but you really can’t go wrong with anything that Harbour Tavern has to offer.

On top of all this, a number of their dishes are vegetarian, vegan and gluten free friendly, so no one has to miss out. Which is one of the reasons we included Harbour Tavern on our list of the best restaurants in Mevagissey.

Harbour Tavern is also dog friendly so you can bring your furry friend along too. With the exception of Sundays, the restaurant is open every day from 11.30am – 10pm.

4. Salamander Restaurant

An independent restaurant set in the heart of Mevagissey that specialises in seafood. 

Boasting a varied menu and run by caring and attentive staff who are happy to answer any and all questions you may have, Salamander Restaurant is an absolute must visit when you’re visiting Mevagissey. With beautiful exposed brick walls and intimate lighting, Salamander makes for the perfect setting for a romantic date night.

If you’re in the mood for seafood, then this is the place to be! For a starter, we recommend the delicious St. Austell Bay scallops, and for a main course why not try the Catch of the Day? Just check the blackboard to see what it is.

But if you’re not the biggest fan of seafood or you just fancy something else, Salamander has you covered there too. The Chicken and Smoked Bacon Pate is an absolute must try to start, followed by the mouthwatering Roasted Chicken Breast. And if you find that you’ve still got room after your meal, there’s also a dessert menu – a popular favourite on that is the Sticky Toffee Pudding. 

Salamander Restaurant is open every single day from 6pm – 8.30pm, so be sure to book a table and see what all the fuss is about!

5. Brasserie No.5

A full licensed brasserie offering cooked breakfast, lunch and tapas in the heart of Mevagissey. 

Sitting in the heart of Mevagissey, Brasserie No5 prides itself on offering a menu that reflects the Cornish coast and the countryside that surrounds Mevagissey, with all dishes being made with locally sourced ingredients. 

If you find yourself out and about in the morning, why not pop into No5 for some breakfast? You can’t, of course, go wrong with a breakfast staple like Eggs Benedict, but a popular choice here is the Croque Monsieur which is roasted gammon, parmesan and gruyere cheese. It’s filling but an incredible way to start your day.

The tapas at No5 is also a must try; there’s a lot of choice and no dish will disappoint, but favourites include the Whole Garlic King Prawns, the Sticky Jerk Chicken Wings, the Halloumi Fries and the Salt and Pepper Squid.

And for those amongst us with a sweet tooth, No5 also has a wide range of freshly baked cakes to enjoy. You of course cannot go wrong with the Rich Chocolate Fudge Cake, but who’s not also partial to a Maple and Pecan Flapjack. But whatever you choose, it’ll no doubt be delicious! 

On top of incredible food, No5 also has a wide range of drinks. From the usual drinks you find in any cafe to their uniquely flavoured teas, you are sure to find something that fits your tastes.

And if you want to try some incredible cocktails, No5 offers them too. One favourite is the refreshing Pomegranate Margarita which is silver Tequila, pomegranate puree, sugar syrup, lime and salt. There are also soft drinks available too, of course.

No5 is open every day from 9am – 10pm so pop in and sample some incredible food at easily one of the best restaurants in Mevagissey!

6. Teacup Tearoom

An award winning tearoom offering traditional Cornish cream tea.

You can’t visit Cornwall without indulging in tea and scones, and the Teacup Tearoom is the perfect place to do just that!

Ran by husband and wife David and Lis, the Tearoom prides itself on serving organic, Fairtrade tea and coffee, including 50 types of teas and infusions, locally grown Tregothnan tea and 3 different blends of coffee. All scones are made fresh in the morning, so if you have any dietary requirements, contact the Tearoom at least 48 hours before you visit and they will be happy to accommodate you.

As well as offering a wide range of scones (the fruit ones are particular favourites)Teacup Tearoom also serves waffles, cakes, a range of sandwiches and also a range of milkshakes, so there’s something for everyone on the menu.

In our opinion though, no visit to Teacup Tearoom is complete without trying their hot chocolate: it’s rich and smooth and will have you wanting to go back for seconds. And if all that isn’t enough, dogs are welcome too and will be provided with somewhere comfy to sit, some water and a few treats to make their visit enjoyable too.

7. The Fishermen’s Chippy

A traditional British fish and chips shop in the heart of Mevagissey. 

Only a stone’s throw from the harbour, The Fishermen’s Chippy is the perfect place to indulge in a staple of the British seaside.

Dedicated to sustainability, you can be assured that a visit to Fishermen’s aids both the environment and your hunger. A vast majority of their packaging is made from recycled materials, and their carrier bags are made of paper or from fully biodegradable materials. On top of this, they also support local farming and select their potatoes from local farms.

The menu is a standard chippy menu, offering battered cod, chips and mushy peas, along with meat options for those who would prefer that. Of course, we recommend getting battered cod and chips for the authentic seaside experience – just look out for the seagulls though!

The Fishermen’s Chippy is open Monday to Sunday from 12pm – 2pm, and then opens again from 4pm – 8pm. When it comes to fish and chips this is easily one of the best restaurants in Mevagissey.

8. Alvorada 

A small intimate restaurant offering authentic Portuguese cuisine. 

For a taste of Portugal in Mevagissey, why not try Alvorada? Sitting in the heart of town, Alvorada makes for the perfect setting for a romantic date night alongside incredible locally sourced food.

They supply their fish themselves as Antonio, their chef, is also a fisherman. Ran by a husband and wife team, the warm and welcoming vibe of Alvorada is sure to make you feel right at home! 

The menu is seafood heavy – and for good reason. For starters, we recommend the Tiger Prawns, cooked with a distinct Mediterranean flair that you won’t find anywhere else in Mevagissey. And for a main, one favourite is the popular fish kebab. Wash this down with a bottle of delicious Portuguese wine, and you’ll be wanting to visit again sooner rather than later.

Due to Alvorada being one of the most popular restaurants in Mevagissey, it is recommended that you book in advance to avoid disappointment! The restaurant is closed on Monday but otherwise open from 12pm – 9pm for the rest of the week!
