Windermere boasts the largest lake in England and has been a magnet for visitors since Victorian times. However one of our favourite aspects about this scenic Lakeland destination is the wealth of very good restaurants in Windermere!

Whether you want to grab a quick bite after exploring the rugged scenery and majestic trails here, or fancy a posh dinner with your family, Windermere never disappoints.

With many Windermere restaurants to choose from, including some lakeside restaurants boasting scenic views of England’s largest lake, it can be overwhelming deciding which ones to choose.

However that’s where we can help! We know this area well, and so below we share with you what we believe are the most lively, quirky and best restaurants in Windermere. (Related: Camping in Lake Windermere).

Located on a quaint cobbled street, Hyltons Restaurant is a great dining option if you are looking for a relaxed and charming atmosphere with traditional English cuisine.

The friendly, attentive and quick service, hearty food and good portion size make this restaurant a popular haunt for locals and visitors alike.

We love Hyltons great wine list, as well as their gin and cocktail menu which compliments the dishes they serve perfectly. And it’s all at an affordable price.

Their menu consists of dishes such as steak, pizza, pasta, burgers and seafood. What we recommend trying is their delicious ribs, coleslaw and dough balls. If you are in a group and fancy sharing, then the Camembert as a starter and then the 1kg Tomahawk Steak as a main is a great option.

3. Vinegar Jones

Situated just a 2 minute walk from the World of Beatrix Potter, Vinegar Jones is the ideal choice for a quick fish and chips fix.

Despite being destroyed by a fire, this place has bounced back in style, and now has an attractive interior and the best fish and chips in the area.

They have gluten free options, large portions, and some of the best chunky chips we’ve ever tasted. We recommend trying their lightly battered fish and chips with a carton of curry sauce, vegetable gravy and mushy peas.

4. The Albert

Situated just a stone’s throw away from Lake Windermere, this gastropub boasts a very cosy and beautiful outside seating area and offers a great choice of wine, ales and beer, including beers by some of our favourite brewers – Robinsons!

Famous for their scrumptious Sunday roast, it isn’t hard to see why people are willing to wait – their roast silverside of beef, accompanied with veggies, mashed potatoes or crispy roasted potatoes, as well as the obligatory Yorkshire pudding never disappoints.
