Our Top Eight Picks for the Best Restaurants in Weatherford, TX

1. Mesquite’s Pit

Hearty plates of BBQ and steaks served in a spacious and rustic cabin-like setting.

When craving BBQ or a beautifully seared steak, Mesquite’s Pit is everyone’s go-to place. This family-run, decades-old place is one of the best restaurants in Weatherford, TX, mainly for their mouth-watering food made from age-old family recipes, but also for their delightful ambiance.

It’s a rustic place with a very cabin-like vibe and decor with an Old West flair to it. Snag a table by the gorgeous brick wall or sit at the bar, and muse over animals displayed on the wood-paneled walls as you wait for your food to arrive. Either way, you’ll love devouring the food in this atmosphere!

Their menu is pretty easy, revolving mainly around BBQ, steaks, and seafood. Chow down their drool-worthy slow-smoked ribs served with an impossibly good sauce, or get one of their open-fire grilled, juicy steaks that are always executed impeccably.

Everything is done on mesquite-fired pits that make what they serve ten times better. In case you’re not feeling up to red meat, try their grilled chicken entrees – they’re lip-smacking good (locals swear by it too!). Or just get one of their char-broiled burgers or sandwiches for a quick and delicious meal. Whatever you choose to order, don’t forget to get a side of their fried okra.

And if you’ve got room, try the banana pudding – it’s so good that it gets sold out before you can say banana!

Open from Monday to Saturday from 11 am onwards, Mesquite’s Pit and their hearty, down-to-earth plates of divine-tasting food are surely going to win you over once you experience it.

2. Tavern on the Lake

Juicy burgers and beers with live music and a porch with a view of Lake Weatherford.

If you’re out for a fun time with friends over some drinks and burgers, head to Tavern on the Lake. This understated local gem is located off the beaten path at the edge of Lake Weatherford, so naturally, it has a wonderful outdoor seating arrangement.

Their porch at the back has a stunning view of the Lake, is shaded well, and has plenty of tables. It’s perfect for sipping on drinks, after which you can walk to the edge of the lake and watch ducks paddle away. Sweet! There are lots of tables inside as well, with TV screens for you to muse over some sports.

Their menu is simple and easy, but everything they serve always comes out piping hot and cooked exactly the way you want it. We recommend trying the very cheesy Stuffed Texican burger, as its patty is stuffed with jalapenos and cheese, and then topped with even more cheese and the usual trimmings. Get a side of their salad if you feel guilty about all the cheese.

The Hot Mess sandwich is a popular choice too, as it comes with their homemade Carolina honey BBQ sauce over a perfectly grilled chicken breast. Want to try something different? Get the ‘Not So Po Boy’, which has two fried catfish filets with a remoulade sauce over brioche – it’s pretty darn good and a popular pick!

Wash all that good stuff down with some of their many local draft beers, and you’re all set. Oh and, they’ve got live music every other day! (Check out their socials for schedules).

Beers, burgers, music, a lake view – what else could one want? So go ahead and visit between Friday to Sunday from 11 am onwards, and 4 pm onwards on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Closed on Mondays.

3. Zeno’s on the Square

Italian fine dining in a chic dining room with a tableside cheese wheel pasta experience.

Chef Zubboli brings Italian fine dining to the streets of downtown Weatherford at Zeno’s on the Square. There’s appears to not be a plate that goes by without compliments to the chef, as everything is made from scratch here – pasta, bread, sauces, and all.

To match the exuberant food, this place has an elegant and modern dining room, with muted green walls, chic furniture, and a full bar. Large windows make the lunch atmosphere bright and refreshing, while dinners are in dimmed lights and a mellow experience. Despite all the frills, the place feels comfortable and homey.

Their menu is fine-tuned, with classic Italian dishes that are elevated to their level best. Start with their rich tomato and basil soup, or get the Antipasto Italiano charcuterie board if you’re feeling extra fancy. Continue with either their homemade pasta which includes mouth-watering beef tenderloin ravioli with a truffle demi glace, or one of the elegant-looking entrees.

Their Tuscan lamb chops are worth spending the extra bucks, served with mint pesto and a potato ‘foam’. As is the Cioppino – a seafood stew with octopus, salmon, and other fresh fish in a light arrabbiata sauce. Pair it with one of their divine wines and finish off with a decadent homemade dessert like peach tiramisu.

If you’re in on a special occasion, don’t forget to order the table side experience of their aged cheese wheels – something you won’t find elsewhere in the city!

4. Antebellum Ale House

Fun tavern with beers on tap, bar food, and a spacious outdoor seating area with live music.

Located on a quiet residential road, Antebellum Ale House is one of the most popular restaurants in Weatherford, TX.

They’ve got a fantastic outdoor setting in their backyard, where locals flock to so they can hang out over some drinks and delicious bar eats. There are plenty of tables here – some under the shade, others under umbrellas – surrounded by space heaters for the colder months with pretty lights all over the backyard. They even have a few high tops for the solo folks who’d like to dine al fresco.

The inside is lovely too, and feels as if you’ve stepped into a cabin in the woods. It’s pretty cozy and homey with TVs in case you want to catch a game.

Their food menu is short and straightforward, but boy can they whip up a great meal! Start with their delicious cream cheese queso or the meat and cheese board. Move on to their ever-so-popular flatbread pizzas that come in a range of flavors such as the Hot Chick (Sriracha BBQ sauce, chicken, jalapenos, and red onions,) and the Chicken Alfredo (parmesan, chicken, spinach, and mushrooms). You can even build your own or just ask about the pizza specials of the week.

If pizzas aren’t your thing, definitely get their juicy sandwiches – the Hot Roast Beef is a favorite! Oh and, they very often have BBQ offered by Tailgators (a local food truck).

And don’t forget to get one of their 45 beers on tap or a moonshine cocktail whipped up by their talented bartenders. They’re very dog-friendly as well, and even have a creative little menu for your furry pals!

5. Shep’s

Bar food served in sports-themed rooms with arcade games and pool tables, along with outdoor seating, incredible craft beer selection and live music.

Eating out is a whole lot of fun if you choose to dine at Shep’s. The place isn’t just famous for its amazing hot dogs and juicy burgers, but also draws quite a crowd for the variety of entertainment it offers.

Seating options are seemingly endless at this ginormous restaurant, where there’s an arcade room, a pool table room, or in the front where there are claw machines for the kids to have fun with. There are plenty of TVs in every room, and the sports-themed decor only adds to the fun vibe here. Outdoor seating is well-spaced too, where you’ll find local bands playing their best music every Thursday.

But if we’re honest, Shep’s main draw is their downright delicious food. The menu mainly revolves around cheesy and tempting handhelds like Pop’s Chili Dog, which is filled to the brim with homemade chili and loads of cheese over a beef dog inside a grilled bun.

Burger offerings are creative and made-to-order, such as the Salisbury Steak that’s loaded with fries, mushrooms, and brown onion gravy. Share a plate of their sticky Teriyaki wings and gulp down all that good stuff with one of their 130+ craft beers. Oh and, they’ve got gluten-free and vegetarian options as well, so everyone’s welcome to have a great time!

6. Nizza Pizza

No-frills place with pizzas and home-style Italian eats in hearty portions.

Sometimes it’s the little places that can surprise you, and that’s exactly the case with Nizza Pizza.

Although there are many restaurants in Weatherford, TX serving pizza and Italian fare, it’s this hole-in-the-wall pizzeria that locals rave about the most – not just for the consistently good, authentic Italian eats, but also for the great value.

Enjoy hearty and generously-portioned food in their no-frills interior, where you’ll find checkered tablecloths and quaint decor, giving the place a very neighborhood diner feel.

Their menu is huge and has all sorts of pizzas one could ever want – NY-style, deep-dish, and even stuffed pizzas. We recommend the Supreme Pizza, topped with Canadian bacon, sausage, hamburger, pepperoni, and veggies – it’s quite the talk of the town! The White Pizza is also enticingly cheesy and creamy, and another popular choice. Get them as NY style or deep-dish – your pick.

NY-style pizzas are also available by the slice, so you can try a bit of each of their drool-worthy flavors! They also do strombolis, calzones, and hot and cheesy subs (the Philly cheesesteak is a must-try). And their pasta and endless entrees? Enormous portions (you’ll definitely have leftovers!), authentic taste, and always piping hot. What else could one want?

7. Flames

Seafood offerings in a casual atmosphere with a patio and live music.

Avid seafood enthusiasts will find their dreams come true at Flames, where fresh fish and oysters will leave you licking your fingers clean.

A locals’ favorite, this seafood place is easily one of the best restaurants in Weatherford, TX. Sit inside their dimly-lit, spacious dining rooms, surrounded by brick walls and a warm and casual atmosphere, or go alfresco on their patio where you (and your dogs) can hum to some live music.

Their menu has pretty much all sorts of fresh seafood dishes you could ever want. Start with their Mexican shrimp cocktail, or if you’re feeling bold, try the fried alligator served with a fantastic homemade cajun remoulade!

Or just get the ocean fresh oysters, whether chargrilled, baked, or raw – your pick. Entree favorites include jalapeno Lousiansa catfish and the butterflied stuffed shrimps that never fail to delight hungry patrons.

Continue with the shared platters – say, the fish and chips and fried oysters – or move on to some divine desserts like their classic banana pudding. No matter what you get, expect large, hearty portions that are always fresh, hot, and served in an unpretentious manner.

8. Rio Mambo

Tex-Mex and a variety of margaritas served in a contemporary setting.

The folks here at Rio Mambo have been dishing out deliciously vibrant plates of excellent food since way back in 2012.

And this isn’t your average Tex-Mex/Mexican restaurant either. Instead of the typical colorful decor that’s found in most places, Rio Mambo is designed in a contemporary and modern way. Mood lights surround a spacious and dark interior with a fancy bar (called the RMW4), and the wraparound patio is equally roomy with pretty tables under umbrellas. A perfectly aesthetic setting for sipping margaritas, which they specialize in, by the way!

Everything here is served all prettied up and in good portions. Lunch includes Taco Chinos – a refreshing plate lined with lettuce wraps and filled with either chicken or shrimp, which is an excellent choice for a light meal. The Pollo Espinaca (chicken and spinach enchiladas) go well with their Ensalada Mazatlan salad, which is a creative combo of grilled chicken, avocados, smoked bacon, blueberries, and strawberries with a housemade dressing.

Dinner features hefty plates like the Plato Diana, which comes with marinated and charbroiled tender chicken over sauteed mushrooms and poblano peppers with Mexican rice and soup. The sizzling platter it comes on is a bonus!

On weekends they do a mean brunch, with stuff like Huevos con Barbacoa – easy eggs over Mexican BBQ and avocado – and a Mexican-style egg benedict served over grilled ham, fried tortilla, and topped with chile con queso. Yum! Pair that with a Poinsettia or a Bloody Mary.

And in case you fall in love with their classy margaritas (which you definitely will), drop by on a Thirsty Thursday to get them at a discounted price all day long. Rio Mambo is open on weekdays from 11 am onwards and weekends from 10 am onwards, so do visit them and say Hola!
