Our Top Eight Restaurants in Covington, LA: Food Worth Waiting For!

1. Del Porto Ristorante

An award-winning white-tablecloth establishment serving Italian fare in an intimate atmosphere

With the combined culinary skills and passion of power couple Chef David and Chef Torre Solazzo, Del Porto Ristorante is easily one of the most lauded restaurants in downtown Covington, LA.

This fine dining establishment has won several awards throughout the years for its contemporary Italian cuisine, and the elegant setting and excellent service only makes dining here all the more worthwhile.

Modern paintings grace the walls of the otherwise white-washed dining area, with linen tablecloths, candles, fine china, and jazz playing in the background. There’s a bar here as well, and the small and cozy dining area is the perfect quiet setting for an intimate dinner of Italian delicacies.

With a menu of innovative dishes doused in authentic Italian flavors, the chefs serve farm-to-table, scratch-made fare that never fails to please guests.

Lunch revolves around light meals of gourmet paninis made with house-made bread and pizza of the day, alongside a creamy mushroom risotto, and in true Italian fashion, some hand-made artisan pasta.

Dinner features rich and elegant plates of duck lasagna, rosemary pork chop with roasted apple mustard sauce, and melt-in-the-mouth veal braised in a decadent tomato sauce.

Every dish is paired with complex elements that marry together perfectly – take that to the next level by getting some of their fine wines or fantastic cocktails to go along.

Although meals here can be a little pricey (though the quality makes it worth it), their happy hour deals (5-6 pm) offer discounted small bites like house-made cavatelli and assorted grilled vegetables, so you can experience their elegant atmosphere either way.

Find them open Tuesday-Saturday for lunch and Tuesday-Thursday for dinner, and don’t forget to get reservations!

2. Bear’s Restaurant

Long-standing family-run restaurant serving huge po’boys in an informal setting

If you ask locals where to find the best po’boys in Covington, LA, you’ll likely hear “Bear’s Restaurant!” for an answer every time.

This counter-serve place has been around for many decades, is still family-owned and operated, and people from all over the Northshore have grown up feasting on their sizable po’boys. Not a thing has changed about their business style since they started out except that they are far more popular now.

They’ve admittedly outgrown their humble and small venue, as people line up in long queues just to get their hands on these po’boys. But clearly their focus has remained on serving consistently good food.

Served on Leidenheimer French bread, these sandwiches are sloppy yet still crispy on the inside, and stuffed to the brim with meat and dressing (so make sure to ask for extra napkins!).

Being enticingly enormous – almost too much at times – is their signature trait, though you can always get half a po’boy which is usually enough for most folks.

Without a second thought, reach out for the roast beef – it’s their most sought-after po’boy that leaves people licking their fingers clean. But the Ferdie (roast beef, swiss cheese, grilled ham) and shrimp po’boys are runner-ups.

If you’re absolutely ravenous, try pairing these bad boys with a side of their grilled onions, but we bet you’ll feel overstuffed before you even finish your meal.

Open 10.30 am – 3 pm between Monday-Saturday, this Northshore staple is a must-try when in Covington. Fair warning – they’re often overwhelmed with hungry patrons throughout lunch, so call ahead if you’re pressed for time, or prepare to wait. It’ll be worth it, though.

3. Gallagher’s Grill

An upscale steakhouse with a relaxed atmosphere and patio seating

Gallagher’s Grill is one of Pat Gallagher’s long-running successful restaurants along the Northshore, and the downright incredible food is why it continues to steal the show on the Covington dining scene.

It’s not hushed up and super formal like most steakhouses, so it’s great for everything from celebratory dinners to laid-back lunches.

In fact the venue is the perfect example of comfort meets upscale, with white tablecloths, a brick fireplace, and a bar in a polished yet relatively casual dining area, along with patio seating.

There’s nothing casual about their steaks, though, as fine cuts like NY strip and ribeye take center stage here. There are plenty of non-steak options too, such as the creamy and tender stuffed chicken breast or some buttery char-grilled quail.

You’ll also find premium sides like seafood mirliton dressing and pecan-crusted potato casserole, alongside go-to’s like a loaded baked potato and sauteed spinach.

Seafood options on the menu are just as remarkable, especially the sautéed pompano served with jumbo lump crabmeat and beurre blanc.

Locals rave about how divine their food tastes, and you’ll often find the chef popping out of the kitchen to check on his guests.

Of course, you have to pair your meals with some of their stellar cocktails or a bottle of Pat’s Personal Red Blend, and finish off with some caramel-drizzled Ooey Gooey cake – a house favorite.

They’re open from 11 am onwards between Tuesday-Friday for lunch and dinner and Saturday for dinner only. Note: As one of the most popular restaurants in Covington, reservations are a must for dinner.

4. The English Tearoom and Eatery

Tea service, all-day breakfast, and lunch served in a quaint and delicate teahouse covered in English-themed decor alongside a beautiful outdoor seating arrangement

Few things are more delightful and relaxing than a leisurely afternoon tea service, and there’s no better place for that than The English Tearoom and Eatery.

This 1992-established tearoom makes heads turn with its quaint and very English interior filled with ornaments and British memorabilia, thanks to owner Tyler’s passion for collectibles.

Choose from one of their themed rooms to sit in, such as the ‘Winston Churchill’ room or the ‘Queen’s Parlor’ where every table has fresh flowers, beautiful cups and saucers, and cute sugar cubes. Even the outdoor seats on their porch and side patio are surrounded by English-themed decor (there’s a life-sized red phone booth too!).

As important as the atmosphere, protocols, and all the little accessories are during tea, it all comes down to the food in the end, and this place surely doesn’t disappoint.

With over 200 different teas, you might feel stumped for choice here, but they’ve got friendly and knowledgeable staff to help you with that.

The rest is a spread of buttery scones with house-made clotted cream, finger sandwiches, fruit and cheese boards, chocolate-dipped strawberries, and such heavenly tidbits.

They also do all-day breakfasts that include stuff like Scottish eggs, a decadent breakfast casserole called ‘Buckingham Bake’, and wonderful crumpets.

Of course, you can also indulge in English lunch picks like shepherd’s pie and bangers and mash. Either way, you’ll be impressed with their authentic and spot-on flavors.

So put on a pretty dress, reserve your spot, and experience Britain right here in little Covington, LA at what may just be the town’s most unique dining spot. They’re open Monday-Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm.

5. Desi Vega’s Steakhouse

An upscale steakhouse with vibrant cocktails served in a live-music filled energetic atmosphere

If your idea of a night of celebration includes classy steaks, fancy cocktails, music, and VIP treatment, then you’re going to love Desi Vega’s Steakhouse.

As someone who grew up learning about the restaurant business, owner Desi strives to make every guest’s experience memorable at his steakhouses, and this Covington outpost is just as impressive as you can imagine.

Settle down inside the stunning dining room with mood lights, modern decor, and of course, some extravagant steaks, then head next door to their Aprés Lounge for after-dinner drinks and live music to croon and swoon away the night.

The atmosphere is upscale and bougie in both areas of the restaurant, including the gorgeous marble-top bar area.

Despite all the style and shenanigans, the show stoppers remain to be the fine (and expensive) steaks here. Choose from a selection of cuts like porterhouse, filet mignon, or a marbled tomahawk, then throw in compliments like jumbo lump crab meat and some brandy peppercorn sauce.

Other highlights include the bacon-wrapped Who Dat Shrimp appetizer, pan-roasted scallop with saffron risotto, and broiled lobster tail with crawfish and andouille macaroni gratin.

Everything is presented stunningly, not to forget the theatrical cocktails and the flaming S’more dessert that comes with tableside service. And don’t be surprised if Desi himself stops by your table – he likes to give his guests a personable dinner experience.

Reserve your spots between Tuesday – Saturday from 5 pm onwards to experience Covington’s nightlife at its best. And if you’re a fan of Italian food, drop by on Wednesdays for the chef’s 3-course prix fixe meal and live Italian music.

6. Coffee Rani

Coffee and innovative breakfast and lunch picks served in a stylish yet casual setting with a charming patio

Often, the best place you can grab a bite is within the comfort of your local coffee house, where the smell of coffee and delicious bites wafts through the air. For Covington locals, that place has been Coffee Rani for many years, thanks to owner Ann Jesmison and her sister’s dedication.

It’s a chic little counter-order cafe serving elevated breakfast and lunch picks. White tables and chairs, homey decor, and a laid-back atmosphere make up the dining area, while the fenced-in patio surrounded by potted plants offer an equally cute setting.

Whether it’s your morning fix, brunch with the girls, or a quick cuppa joe, they’ve got you covered for pretty much everything.

For breakfast, expect innovative stuff like avocado toasts with hummus, radishes, and grape tomatoes and a cross between a sandwich and a croissant filled with fig jam, egg, brie, and crispy bacon.

They’ve also got decadent picks like huevos rancheros and quesadillas, while Sunday brunch features more exciting stuff like eggs Sardou and mimosas with generous champagne pours.

Meanwhile, lunch and dinner revolve around entree-style vibrant salads like the Jamaican Jerk on spinach with a pepper-jelly vinaigrette or the pesto bowtie pasta on a caesar salad. Light, refreshing, and an absolute treat for the tastebuds.

Amid the eclectic menu, you’ll also find grilled Tuscan chicken, blackened seasoning grilled fish, gourmet sandwiches, and vegetarian offerings.

Let’s not forget their amazing chai and coffee that’s got the locals hooked (do try their Vietnamese-style coffee!). Find them open every day from 8 am – 7 pm (8 am – 3 pm for Sunday brunch), and don’t forget to grab some of their decadent pastries to-go.

7. Pho Cong

Pho and other Vietnamese dishes served in a casual and humble setting

Sometimes, it’s the unexpected little places that dish out the most incredible food, and that’s exactly the case with Pho Cong.

Located in an inconspicuous strip mall, this humble family-owned eatery has been serving the Northshore steaming hot bowls of pho and other Vietnamese delicacies since 2018. And on cold winter days, these bowls really do come off as a warm hug for locals.

It helps that their indoor dining area is small and low-key with a couple of tables outside at the storefront, so you can come in the comfort of your hoodie and tuck into some pho without any scene and fuss.

Although they’ve got several Vietnamese dishes on the menu, the main stars of the show are the delicious pho bowls. Chewy noodles in a light and refreshing beef broth that’s cooked for eight hours, topped with fresh veggies and thick slices of your choice of protein. Absolute perfection!

They’ve got brisket, rare steak, seafood, tofu, and vegetarian pho varieties, along with a spicy lemongrass option that leaves guests smacking their lips in delight. The sizable Banh Mi’s are served on freshly baked artisan bread and stuffed to the brim with tender brisket/beef/chicken slices and veggies. No matter what you get, it’ll all be packed with flavor and served in huge portions.

Finish off with some boba, and you’ll be left feeling warm, fuzzy, and satisfied. Sounds like a pretty good time to us! Drop by between Monday-Saturday from 10 am onwards, and find out why their pho is considered the best in all of Northshore.
