Crete has an impressive network of well-marked trails that take you through some of the most stunning landscapes.

In particular, the Samaria Gorge in the White Mountains is a must-do and the number 1 day hike in Greece. 

The gorge is one of the longest and deepest in Europe and is surrounded by the Samaria National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that offers plenty of sweeping views, beautiful wildflowers, and endemic animals such as the rare kri-kri goats.

For water enthusiasts, Crete is replete with aquatic activities too. The island’s clear blue waters are perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and scuba diving, letting you discover the mesmerising underwater world.

Dive sites like the Blue Cave, which is ideal for beginners, and the Gorgonian Garden, a deep dive that is perfect for advanced divers, are popular.

Snorkelling trips are another way to experience and enjoy the undersea world. You can also take a boat tour around the island and explore the park’s hidden coves and secluded beaches.

Alonissos has a network of well-marked trails, the most famous of which is the Old Town Trail that leads you through the charming cobblestone streets of the island’s historic capital, Chora.

Exploring the island and visiting its seaside villages on a mini road trip can be fun too. With its quiet roads and scenic routes, Alonissos is also perfect for exploring on two wheels and can rent a bike and pedal your way through the charming villages and dramatic landscapes, taking in the sights and sounds of this unique island.

6. Naxos

The largest of the Cyclades group, Naxos is also well-known among water sports enthusiasts and the island’s warm waters and stunning coastline make it the perfect beach-side destination!

While sunbathing on the beaches and swimming in the turquoise waters are ideal holiday things-to-do, you’ll be missing out on a lot if you don’t go for some adventure here.

The island’s crystal-clear waters are home to a variety of marine life, including colourful fish, octopi, and even shipwrecks.

In particular, divers and snorkelers will love Grotta Beach – the beach is known for ancient Minoan settlements that are submerged in the sea and can still be seen.  

The beaches of Naxos also draw in windsurfers. The islands’ perfect wind conditions and relatively calm waters are perfect for windsurfing and kite surfing.

The best spots are Agios Georgios beach and Mikri Vigla beach, where you can rent equipment and take lessons from experienced instructors.

For something a bit more laid-back, paddle boarding is also possible. You can rent a paddleboard and explore the island’s beautiful coastline at your own pace, taking in the stunning views and enjoying the calm waters.

For motorcycle enthusiasts, Naxos is the place to be! The Naxos Adventure Rally takes place on the island and the rides take bikers through rugged terrain and some of the most challenging landscapes, where the natural scenery is just gorgeous! 

And equally thrilling are the hiking trails. The highlight of any hiking trip to Naxos is the ascent to Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades. The views from the summit are simply breathtaking! 

7. Milos

Milos is a world on its own. Exotic and laid-back, well-known for its spectacular beaches and volcanic landscape, this island is full of charm.

Lying in the heart of the Aegean Sea, Milos boasts a colourful and varied landscape and a long, beautiful coastline. Just say the name Milos, and we’d pack our bags, grab our hiking boots and swimsuit, and be ready to experience the adventure of a lifetime.

The coastline of Milos is dotted with many beaches. The beaches of Sarakiniko and Kleftiko are particularly gorgeous, and wildly popular. 

Sarakiniko has a unique lunar landscape, with volcanic rock formations against turquoise waters. The spot is perfect for cliff-diving. You can also go snorkelling and explore the undersea caves.

Kleftiko is similar and quite iconic too, and accessible only by a boat tour, making it all the more adventurous.

Kayaking is also a fun thing to do on Milos. The crystal-clear waters and rugged coastline make the island perfect for a day of paddling.

Luckily you can easily rent a kayak and explore the island’s hidden coves and secluded beaches. Guided tours are best, if you want to see the best of everything. Tsigrado Beach is very well-known, for the fact that you can only access it by climbing across a passage that goes through rocks or water.

As with the other Greek islands, hiking is another popular activity. Milos also has a range of well-marked trails that take you through some of the most scenic landscapes.

The most popular hiking trail on the island is the hike to the top of Profitis Ilias Mountain, which offers stunning panoramic views of the island and the surrounding sea.

Walking through a volcano is super cool too. And the dormant Volcano of Milos offers the opportunity to experience something out of the ordinary- walk the peak of the volcano and see fumes coming from under the earth’s surface!

8. Rhodes

The largest of the Dodecanese islands, Rhodes is known mainly for its beach resorts. Nevertheless, it is a fantastic destination if you’re seeking an exciting and adventurous vacation.

Rhodes offers a mix of land and sea activities, and its varied landscapes makes sure there is something exciting to do for every kind and level of holidaymaker.

Rock climbing is very popular on Rhodes, with plenty of rocky cliffs to conquer.

You can find a range of climbing routes suitable for both beginners and experienced climbers at Lindos, which is the favourite spot for rock climbers. A number of experienced guides usually prep you with the basics so you’re good to go!

Hiking is another fun activity. There are a number of both short and long trails on the island that take you through quaint villages, stunning bays, and spectacular peaks.

Two of our favourite routes are the ones that take you up to Akramisits Mountain, and the other up to the highest peak, Attavyros Mountain. The panoramic views of the sea from above are not to be missed!

And if you’re looking for a unique way to explore the island, why not try a horseback riding excursion? Rhodes has several riding schools that offer guided tours through the island’s rugged landscapes, taking you through forests and hills to hidden beaches and traditional villages.

Rhodes has plenty to offer for the water lovers as well. Windsurfing is a favourite pastime on the island, with the strong winds and calm waters making it ideal.

The best spots for windsurfing on the island are Ixia and Prasonisi beaches.

Diving is also sublime on Rhodes. The most popular diving spots on the island are at the eastern coast, including Kalithea, Faliraki, and Lindos.
