Our Top 10 Picks For Breakfast In St Augustine: Food Worth Getting Out Of Bed For!

1. Cousteau’s Waffle and Milkshake Bar

Calling all the waffle aficionados – if you wake up one day with a strong craving for some delicious Belgian waffles, head to Cousteau’s Waffles and Milkshake Bar.

Located in the downtown area, this tiny, unassuming place serves up nothing but fancy and innovative  waffles and some milkshake magic. And although it’s more of a dessert shop than a breakfast place, no one does a waffle better justice than Cousteau’s!

There’s not much space to sit inside, except for a few stools up against the walls, but you can always snag a table outside in their tiny but cute courtyard. The red tables and chairs surrounded by plants and lights make for the perfect setting for these sweet treats!

Their menu tops at about 10 types of waffles, but there’s not a weak link among them. We recommend the ‘Life on Mars’ waffle that’s topped with a unique combination of coconut ice cream and espresso whipped cream, along with a drizzle of mocha and toasted coconut flakes. We won’t blame you if you start drooling just by looking at it!

If you want to go all out, go for the Hennessey, which has toasted marshmallow fluff with chocolate sauce and graham cracker crumbles on a chewy yet soft waffle. You’ll definitely want s’more of this treat! Don’t forget the rich milkshakes either, such as the Calypso, which is a key lime pie-flavored frothy delight.

Cousteau’s is open every day from 10 am onwards, and on Saturdays, they open up a bit early at 9 am. They stay open until 9 to 10 pm, so you can devour these supreme waffles any time of the day!

There’s no shortage of pretty-looking restaurants for breakfast in St Augustine, but Georgie’s Diner is one of a kind with its 60s theme.

Located within walking distance of many attractions, this Greek diner serves up homestyle breakfast in a nostalgic ambiance. Checkered tiles, red booths, and chrome fixtures all add to the retro aesthetic, while the 60s music in the background is bound to put you in a good mood!

Don’t care for this vibe? You can still enjoy their expertly cooked meals on the spacious and cute porch, surrounded by vines and shaded by the sun. Bring along your furry pal too!

Although the menu isn’t very expansive, everything on it always comes out hot, fresh, and absolutely delish.

For those with a sweet tooth, we suggest trying out their impossibly fluffy candied almond pancakes. Slather these gigantic treats with some maple syrup and you’re all set for the day.

The savory side of their menu is equally tempting, and the Greek omelet is one you should not miss out on. Filled to the brim with feta, tomatoes, and onions, this mighty omelet will keep you full well after lunch. Tip: get a side of their hash browns. They’re some of the best in this area – no kidding!

3. Harbor View Cafe

If there’s one thing that can make you throw off the covers and jump out of bed, it’s the southern classics from Harbor View Cafe.

This unassuming little cafe looks very low-key from both the outside and inside, with a relaxed and cozy vibe to it. Quaint tables are scattered inside this small space, with some bar seating for the solo diners. The gorgeous view of the harbor from within the big windows doesn’t hurt either, so you can sit back, sip on some coffee, and watch boats sail in and out of view.

As for the breakfast menu, it mainly revolves around the basics like egg and toast, omelets, and of course, some much-loved southern classics. Try their buttery biscuits that are drenched in sausage gravy, or the Southern omelet that’s loaded with bacon and cheese – you’ll be licking your fingers clean!

And in case you’re a Benedict kind of person, get their Mary’s Benedict that lays on top of a freshly baked biscuit and is covered with the creamiest hollandaise sauce you’ll ever taste. Don’t forget to get a side of their perfectly seasoned home fries.

4. Blue Hen Cafe

Tucked away in the historic Lincolnville neighborhood is Blue Hen Cafe – one of the most popular (and affordable!) places offering comfort-style breakfast in St Augustine.

Casual and comfortable vibes make this place feel super homey and cozy, and the vintage aesthetics only add to that. There are only a handful of tables here, which makes it a great spot to relax in as it’s never a crowd here, while the kind staff bend over backward to ensure your visit is memorable.

You could say it’s the limited space that keeps the waiting lines long outside this cafe, but in all honesty, their irresistibly good food is what pulls in the crowds here.

Their menu spans from hearty and homemade corned beef hash to indulgent French toasts and benedicts – all made from scratch and served in enormous portions.

The Zada Jane’s Stack is one mighty plate that can satisfy the biggest of appetites, complete with pork sausages, a cheesy frittata, a biscuit, and sweet potato fries. The Blue Crab Quiche is also a popular pick, and you’ll know why once you bite into this cheesy and savory delight.

And the King’s French toast made with brioche? Four words come to mind when describing it: sweet, incredible, order it! The best part is that they serve several breakfast items all day long (including the hefty breakfast burrito) so you can roll out of bed at 1 pm and still munch on yummy eggs and toast.

Don’t forget to get their outstanding mimosas served in pint glasses to accompany your meal! Open from Wednesday to Sunday, 8 am to 2 pm, this place is just so good at what they do that you might find yourself coming back for lunch!

5. Sunday

If there’s one word to describe this place, it’s picturesque. A popular spot for brunch in St Augustine, Sunday stands out as one of the most aesthetically pleasing restaurants for breakfast in St Augustine too.

Walking into the property through an arch, it feels like you’re entering an enchanted garden of some sort, where the patio is surrounded by trees and plants with stone tables and benches under bright white umbrellas.

Inside the restaurant, it’s equally bright and airy with light-colored wooden furniture, plants hanging here and there, and contemporary decor. High tops in front of large windows offer an extra dose of sunlight – perfect for catching up with friends over glasses of mimosas.

Believe it or not, it’s not the aesthetics that pulls in the crowds at this place, but the classy food that never fails to amaze the guests.

Their breakfast menu, albeit short, has some of the most tempting dishes with a modern twist to them – all made to order, with care and attention that’s clearly shown in the presentation. The Shakshuka is one of their specialties; eggs cooked to perfection in a tasty tomato and pepper stew – who can resist that?

Their eggs Benedict comes on smoked pork and tastes out of the world, as does the roasted shiitake and oyster mushroom toast with a zesty herb pesto. Speaking about toast, Sunday is known for its homemade loaves of sourdough. They serve all of their menu items with this squishy, airy delight, and also sell it separately (it sells out before you can say ‘sourdough’, so get in early if you want to buy it!)

Sunday is open every day of the week except for Mondays, from 8 am to 3 pm for breakfast, brunch, and lunch. Don’t forget to check their socials, as they often host the ‘Secret Garden Market’, where you can buy flowers, ceramics, and more!

6. The Kookaburra (Downtown)

Stepping into a place where wafting towards you is the smell of freshly baked goods and coffee is our idea of the perfect morning. Known for their crave-worthy Aussie pies, The Kookaburra in the downtown area offers just that, where you can grab a delicious cup of coffee and baked goods before you head off exploring the town.

Sit inside this cozy, quintessential coffee spot that has small tables surrounded by faux potted plants, or relax on their tiny patio where tables overlook cars and tourists passing by. Either way, you’ll find yourself absolutely hooked on the stuff they have to offer!

Flaky, buttery, and filled with everything good, their breakfast pies alone are worth getting out of bed for. The Corker comes filled with sausages, eggs, and cheeses, while vegetarians can devour the Vejjo – sweet potato, broccoli, spinach, egg, and cheddar – both of which give a satisfaction level that is off the charts!

Although one pie will probably be enough for a morning appetite, try and save room for their moist scones or spongy muffins- they’re heavenly good! Vegans and gluten-free folks can also enjoy an impossibly tasty pumpkin donut or the peanut butter muffin. Pair that with one of their signature coffees, such as the Honey Badger or the Hot Aussie, and you’ll be all set for the day.

This place opens up as early as 6.30 am and stays humming with activity till 9 pm (with lunch-y pies on offer). So drop by any day and relax with a cup of coffee on their patio, where you can sit back and wonder what Kookaburra is even supposed to mean (hint: it’s something native to Australia!)

7. PK’s Roosevelt Room

Feeling fancy for breakfast or brunch? There’s no better place to splurge than at the Roosevelt Room by Prohibition Kitchen.

Serving up refined and elevated versions of the classics, this place is an architectural masterpiece that looks simply gorgeous. With rustic brick walls adorned with old paintings and fancy chandeliers, this quaint dining room has that 1920s vibe you won’t find anywhere else in town.

The bar area alone looks incredible, decorated in a bright yet tasteful manner. Yet, surprisingly enough, the atmosphere here is casual enough to sit back, relax, and clink glasses together with a group of friends.

The deceptively simple and short menu offers elegant and innovative plates of Benedict, fancy toasts, and French favorites like Croque Madame. The Hipster Toast has a cult following among locals, which comes with avocado, heirloom tomatoes, goat cheese, bacon, toasted pecans, and a poached egg on some cornbread. It sounds way more simple than it actually is!

The BBQ pork Benedict is equally enticing, served on pumpkin maple flavored pulled pork with fried onion rings and a creamy Carolina hollandaise. Other items (and more reasons to come here) include the Brulee French toast with a blueberry compote, Croque Madame with the best ham you’ll ever taste, and drool-worthy corned beef with a potato confit. Check out their creative seasonal mimosas too – they have a new one every other day, such as the raspberry or watermelon mint.

Open daily from 9 am to 2 pm, PK’s Roosevelt Room is a must-visit spot for breakfast in St. Augustine, especially if you want a romantic setting for breakfast. Walk-in parties are certainly welcome here, but we suggest reservations for brunch if you want to avoid a long wait time.

8. Mimi’s Famous Crepes

Ironically, Mimi’s Famous Crepes is one of St Augustine’s hidden gems, located on the historical St George Street. But those who have ventured and tried their crepes have become regulars and rave about them!

Place your order inside this hole-in-the-wall place, and find yourself a table in their gorgeous garden behind the shop. The spacious place has a secret-garden vibe with stone pathways and is covered with vines and surrounded by plants and quaint tables under umbrellas. A very Instagram-worthy setting!

These aren’t your average crepes either – they’re fluffier than the usual ones and ginormous enough to share with two.

The menu has both savory and sweet temptations. If you’re up for a big breakfast, we recommend trying the French Riviera, which comes with imported ham, fig jam, arugula, and mozzarella, or the Napoleon’s Short Rib which has a delicious red wine sauce and short rib meat that melts in the mouth.

The Le Perfect Pear is a sweet crepe with raspberry sauce, melted brie, and sliced pears, and can satisfy all your sweet cravings, as will the Lemon De La Cream (with a rich lemon cheesecake filling!). Pair that with a cup of their coffee, and you’ve got yourself a reasonably affordable and irresistibly good breakfast in a lovely setting. It doesn’t get better than this!

Drop by this place from Wednesday to Sunday, between 10 am to 5 pm, and you’ll be glad you gave them a chance for breakfast in St Augustine!

9. Schmagel’s Bagels

For those who take their bagels seriously, Schmagel’s Bagels bakes some stellar, chewy crusted bagels and breakfast sandwiches that won’t fail to delight.

Head towards this sweet little place located in the historic district, where owner Cathy runs the place and ensures every bagel is baked and assembled to perfection.

Most of the seating is outside on their garden-like patio, where tables and chairs are shaded by trees and surrounded by lush greenery and a cute fence. Charming? We think so too! They even have fans to keep hungry patrons cool on hot days.

Their menu comprises a surprising variety of bagels, from plain ones to those loaded and filled with everything fresh and delicious. For light bites, consider trying their Tuscan Bagel topped with rosemary, basil, garlic, and other Tuscan seasonings that are sure to leave you impressed. The Cheddar Jalapeno is also one heck of a delicious bagel, loaded with Monterey Jack and cheddar for all the cheese lovers out there.

And in case you’re looking for something a bit more substantial, try the Lox and Cream Cheese – filled with Nova salmon, capers, tomato, and onions. This elevated version of the ordinary lox bagel will have you coming back for more!

In love with their fillings? You can buy some of their mouth-watering spreads to-go, ranging from the sweet and fresh strawberry spread to the tasty jalapeno cream cheese.

Since they bake their bagels fresh and from scratch every day (and also because they taste so darn good), they run out pretty fast, so come early! Schmagel’s Bagels is open every day from 8 am until 1 pm.

10. Manatee Cafe

The Manatee Cafe has been a community hub for vegans and celiacs for over two decades now, but their food is flavorful enough to convince the carnivores to join the crowd too.

Located just outside the Old City, this small predominately vegetarian restaurant has a diner-like vibe, with its turquoise walls dotted with manatee-themed decor.

Not only does their menu offer lots of breakfast classics, but where possible, they use organically grown ingredients to ensure you get a hearty but healthy plate. Tuck into a stack of their vegan pancakes, served with vegan butter and topped with bananas, or the bagel spread with hummus and stuff like avocado and sweet potatoes – either way, you can’t go wrong with these irresistible picks!

The intensely flavored scrambled tofu is a crowd pleaser too, brimming with veggies like kale, broccoli, and avocado, and a drizzle of salsa to spice things up. Throw in a side of their hash browns while you’re at it.
